When the phrase “American Gothic” comes to mind, most people think about the iconic artwork. An older couple standing outside of a plain white house, with the man looking sternly into the viewers’ eyes and the woman looking off into the distance. They are dressed in plain farm clothing and the man is holding a pitchfork.

Scott Bradley, a student in the University of Iowa’s Playwrights Workshop, is working on a docudrama about famed Iowa artist Grant Wood. On Thursday, Nov. 9 at 6 p.m., a portion of The Wood Problem will be presented as a staged reading at the Cedar Rapids Museum of Art.

Highly revered for his artistry that captured his beloved Iowa landscape, the late Grant Wood was not without his detractors. The University of Iowa archives often refer to the "Wood Problem," which serves as the title of a documentary theater piece by Iowa Playwright Workshop's Scott Bradley. The Grant Wood Art Colony in Iowa City is presenting a free, staged reading of an excerpt at 6 p.m
